People often asking this question everywhere. On Youtube comment section, martial art community forums, and even asking me personally in real life or via Instagram message.
Based on my experience against street robbers: 1 style.
Let me tell you about my experiences in martial art. Since 5 years old until adult, i tried various different martial art dojos:
- Taekwondo (1996).
- Karate Kata (2004).
- Karate (2007).
- Aikido (2010).
- Kickboxing (2013).
- Jeet Kune Do (2017).
Cool right? But do you know what result is?
In real street fight situation, in "dead or alive" situation, i only able to use 1 fighting style to survive.
When i training at dojo or do action performance show on stage, i can perform techniques from various different dojos because the situation is normal - peaceful, everyone happy without worry about something threatening their life.
But when i trapped in street fight situation against armed street robbers (3 times!! I was mugged 3 times), my brain work slower. I can't remember any difficult things, in my mind i only able to think "how to survive" and "run, give up or fight until die".
In my country (Indonesia), street crime is very brutal. Even if you give all your money and gadgets, they will keep stabbing / slashing you with their blade, they often killing their victims to erase their crime trace and erase the witnesses. Fight back until die is best option if you're trapped and can't run anymore (in my religion, killed while fighting for justice is called "Syahid", the victim will send by god (Allah) to heaven immediately. Heroic death like brave warrior is best option in my religion).
My mind and body reflex only able to remember 1 fighting style. That's how i survive.
The conclusion is you don't need to wasting your mind, time and money doing "Cross Training" to mastering 2 - 3 martial arts. That will not work in real emergency situation.
If you love Boxing, then focus on your Boxing. If you love Silat, then focus on your Silat. If you love Karate, then focus on your Karate.
Every people have their own fighting style, depend on their skill and personal interest. You must find your own style too.
Well, if you wanna know about my case, the only fighting style i can use in real street fight is Kickboxing. Maybe because deep in my heart i love it so much, so i can learn and master it well. Even in street fight situation, my brain can remember it moves very well so i can use it for fight without problem.
